Abstract: The Horse Racing Week at Ascot is the annual sport highlight beside the Grand Slam Tennis Tournament at Wimbledon. During the Royal Ascot 80000 people visit the races every day. Internationally most recognised is the Ladies Day where the latest collection of extravagant hats can be admired whilst watching the elegant thoroughbreds. Since 2006 the Racecourse gleams with its new Grand Stand, a 260 m long building with a transparent facade and a wavy roof built in a combination of metal cladding and textile membranes. The roof is a geometrically complex structure which cantilevers 21 m above the stands. The topic of this paper is the design and the realisation of the elaborate roof structure in compliance with a very demanding construction schedule.
