Responsible Gambling Strategy Annual Report: 2006-07
In 2002, the Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch was established and became a part of the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General. The Branch is responsible for the overall integrity of gaming and horse-racing in B.C. As part of this responsibility, the Branch manages the Province¡¯s Responsible Gambling Strategy.

The Province¡¯s problem gambling and responsible gambling programs and services are guided by B.C.¡¯s Responsible Gambling Strategy. The three goals of the Strategy are to reduce the incidence of problem gambling, reduce the harmful impacts of excessive gambling, and ensure that gambling is delivered in a manner that encourages responsible gambling and healthy choices. The Branch works towards these goals in a proactive manner and plans to enhance all areas of responsibility in the year ahead.

To ensure that gaming is delivered in a socially responsible manner, the Branch supports several projects that educate the public about responsible gambling practices and increase awareness of problem gambling. Branch programs also ensure that individuals who seek help with problem gambling get the assistance they need, wherever they are in the province.

Demands on programs and services offered by the Province have increased significantly since the Branch was formed in 2002. These demands have required the Branch to find innovative ways to increase efficiency while also increasing service levels. In 2007/08, the Branch budget for problem gambling and responsible gambling programs and services will increase from $4 million to $7 million. This budget increase will help ensure these programs and services remain well supported.
