Abstract: Noise is a great environmental pollutant. The effect of noise on people can be mainly annoyance and hearing damage, although certain other health hazards are also linked with noise. Various countries of the world and international organisations have formulated ambient noise standards to avoid annoyance, to conserve hearing and for comfortable living. Some of the countries have adopted these recommendations in toto and some others are following them in the modified form. Occupational standards have also been laid down by many of the countries. The developing countries are also becoming conscious of the problem of noise pollution and are adopting noise standards suitable to their conditions. In the paper an account of the various sources of noise pollution and standards adopted by the various countries to control environmental, industrial and transport noise is given. Control strategies for proper implementation of the regulations are also discussed.
